Director Shawn Levy Reveals Key Changes to Star Wars: Starfighter
Director Shawn Levy has confirmed significant changes to the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set to be released on May 28, 2027. During a recent appearance on the podcast, On Film… With Kevin McCarthy, Levy shared that he had to modify a crucial aspect of the third act of the film due to unforeseen circumstances.
Levy explained how the original concept for the third act did not align with the overall vision. “We had a whole different idea for something in the third act, and then things didn’t align, and I was forced to come up with a new idea,” he stated. As he continues to shoot this new section, he expressed gratitude for the shift. “Every day, I’m grateful that the way I was supposed to do it didn’t work out, because the new idea that it forced me to explore is so much better than the original idea would have been.”
Unique Pressures of the Star Wars Franchise
Having previously directed films for Netflix and Marvel, Levy emphasized that working on a Star Wars project presents unique challenges. He noted the profound emotional connection fans have with the franchise, stating, “It’s harder and a more unique pressure than any other movie you can make because you go into it understanding how deeply emotional the connection with audiences is.”
Levy acknowledged that while other franchises like Marvel also have dedicated fanbases, the allegiance to Star Wars is unparalleled. “The need, the pressure, self-inflicted mostly, to get it right — that’s intense,” he said.
Star Wars: Starfighter Cast and Crew
Star Wars: Starfighter features a compelling cast led by Ryan Gosling, who portrays a character tasked with protecting a young boy, played by Flynn Gray. The film also stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
The film is directed by Levy from a screenplay written by Jonathan Tropper. Alongside Levy, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, serves as a producer, ensuring that the project aligns with the high standards expected of the franchise.
With these changes underway, anticipation for Star Wars: Starfighter continues to build, as fans eagerly await the next chapter in this beloved universe.
