UPDATE: Mayor Daniel Lurie has just announced the appointment of Alan Wong as the new supervisor for District 4, following a turbulent week that saw the previous appointee, Beya Alcaraz, resign after only seven days in office. This swift decision, made on February 11, 2024, comes as a critical moment for the Sunset and west-side neighborhoods ahead of a significant Board of Supervisors vote on a controversial zoning plan.

Wong, a well-respected veteran in city politics and policy, was selected after extensive community engagement and rigorous vetting, according to the Mayor’s Office. Lurie emphasized the need for strong leadership in the district. “From the very beginning, I’ve been clear about the kind of Supervisor District 4 needs: someone who lives and breathes the district,” he stated.

Wong is set to be sworn into office on February 12, 2024, just in time for the crucial vote on the mayor’s zoning plan aimed at increasing housing density across the city. This plan is a response to state requirements for housing development, particularly impacting northern and western neighborhoods.

His appointment follows the fallout from Alcaraz’s brief tenure, which ended amid allegations of poor business practices at her former pet store and potential wage violations. Lurie took full responsibility for that appointment, promising a more thorough vetting process moving forward.

“With Alan Wong as the supervisor, District 4 will have a strong, steady voice on the issues that matter most,” Lurie asserted. Wong, who has deep roots in the community, expressed his commitment to restoring trust in city government and addressing the needs of local families. “I believe the Sunset, and San Francisco, can thrive again,” Wong said. “But we need leadership that keeps our neighborhoods safe and expands housing opportunities.”

At just 38 years old, Wong boasts an impressive resume. He is currently the policy director at the Children’s Council of San Francisco, a twice-elected trustee of City College, and a first lieutenant in the Army National Guard. He has previously served as a legislative aide to former District 4 Supervisor Gordon Mar and has a strong background in community organizing.

The urgency of Wong’s appointment is underscored by the upcoming elections. The remainder of the term from former Supervisor Joel Engardio will be contested in June 2024, with multiple candidates already announcing their intentions to run. Wong’s prior electoral success as a City College trustee, where he received more votes than were cast in the recall election, positions him as a strong contender.

As the city prepares for this new chapter under Wong’s leadership, the community is hopeful for a focus on safety, housing, and essential services. Wong’s commitment to transparency and local engagement aims to bridge the gaps left by his predecessor. Residents of the Sunset and surrounding areas are eagerly awaiting the positive changes he promises to bring.

Stay tuned for updates on Wong’s swearing-in ceremony and the upcoming Board of Supervisors vote that could reshape the future of housing in San Francisco.
