North Korea Unveils 8,700-Ton Nuclear Submarine: Major Shift
UPDATE: North Korea has just unveiled plans for an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine, marking a significant shift in its military deterrence strategy. The announcement, reported by the state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun on December 25, 2023, describes the vessel as a “revolutionary change” in national defense capabilities.
Photos released from the construction site show the submarine’s exterior nearing completion, with analysts suggesting it may already house a small reactor essential for nuclear operations. This submarine is expected to feature launch tubes for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), similar to North Korea’s existing 3,000-ton Kim Gun Ok submarine.
Kim Jong-un emphasized during the site visit that North Korea has established a “nuclear shield” to protect its sovereignty, asserting the nation’s readiness to expand its nuclear capabilities as necessary. He warned that adversaries threatening North Korea would “pay the price,” underscoring the urgency of this military development in the face of rising tensions in the region.
This unveiling coincides with an intensified debate in South Korea over the need for nuclear-powered submarines, leading analysts to interpret North Korea’s announcement as a strategic show of force aimed at Seoul. Experts suggest that the visible SLBM tubes on the conning tower indicate limited technological advancement, and some believe the timing of this disclosure may have been accelerated in response to discussions in South Korea.
The announcement also raises questions about North Korea’s actual ability to operate a submarine of this size, particularly regarding its mastery of small reactor technology and large submarine construction. The Rodong Sinmun report hints at potential technological support from Russia, which has increased ties with North Korea amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Additionally, on December 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to Kim Jong-un, praising North Korean troops’ “heroic participation” and highlighting the expanding political and economic ties between the two nations.
As this situation develops, observers will closely monitor North Korea’s military advancements and the potential implications for regional security. The international community awaits further updates on the submarine’s capabilities and the broader strategic landscape in East Asia.
