Archbishop Williams Defeats Latin Academy at BABC Holiday Showcase

The BABC Holiday Showcase, a prestigious basketball event held annually in the Boston area, witnessed a thrilling performance from Archbishop Williams High School as they triumphed over Latin Academy with a commanding score of 93-70 on March 2, 2024. This victory not only marked the third consecutive year the school has hosted the showcase but also solidified its standing in the competitive landscape of high school basketball.

Archbishop Williams Shines with Strong Team Effort

In a display of teamwork and skill, Archbishop Williams was led by standout players Jadon Beatty and Jack Olinto, each contributing 18 points to the team’s success. Bobby Louis also played a pivotal role, adding 16 points to the scoreboard. Coach Brian Holden praised his team for their cohesive play, stating, “I think we’ve got eight guys who have played their role completely well to start the season.” He highlighted the offensive synergy among key players, making it difficult for opponents to defend effectively.

The game commenced with both teams struggling to establish their rhythm. However, Beatty quickly ignited the offense, scoring 10 points in the first quarter, allowing Archbishop Williams to secure a 25-15 lead. The momentum shifted in the second quarter as the team launched a decisive 15-2 run, extending their advantage to 40-17 and effectively controlling the game.

Reflecting on the match, Beatty noted, “It was a good win today. But it’s over with. Now, we’ve got to worry about the next game tomorrow.” His focus on future challenges underscores the competitive nature of high school basketball.

Brookline Warriors Make a Statement

In another highlight from the event, the Brookline Warriors faced off against Portsmouth, New Hampshire, showcasing their talent with an impressive 87-56 victory. Junior Caleb Haynes was the standout performer, achieving a remarkable double-double with 38 points and 10 assists, alongside seven steals. His performance was integral to Brookline’s commanding second-half performance, allowing them to outscore Portsmouth 53-27 in the final two quarters.

Haynes emphasized the importance of defensive focus, stating, “(The key) was to just stay focused and stay physical on defense.” This strategic approach proved effective, as Brookline initially struggled but found their rhythm, leading by 34-29 at halftime.

The Warriors’ coach, Johnny Williams, highlighted the significance of this victory. “This says we can play with anyone when we’re locked in,” he remarked, stressing the need for consistent focus and execution in their game plan.

The BABC Holiday Showcase, now in its 49th year, continues to attract top talent from across the country. This year, the event featured teams from outside the region, including schools from New York and Louisiana, further enriching the competitive atmosphere.

According to Leo Papile, Coach and CEO of BABC, the showcase holds deep significance. “High school basketball, for me personally, has historical and sentimental value,” he noted, reflecting on the event’s legacy and impact on young athletes.

As the showcase unfolds, Archbishop Williams and Brookline are set to carry their momentum into future matches, each team eager to continue their winning streaks.
