Mercedes has officially confirmed the retention of their current driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 season. The announcement includes contract extensions for both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, solidifying their positions with the team despite earlier speculation regarding potential changes.

Earlier in the year, Mercedes attempted to secure reigning world champion Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing. However, Verstappen announced in late July that he would remain with Red Bull until at least the end of 2026. This development suggested that Mercedes would likely keep its existing drivers. While the confirmation was anticipated, it took several months of negotiations to finalize the contracts.

In their announcement, Mercedes did not specify the duration of the contracts for Russell and Antonelli, simply stating they are confirmed for 2026. This ambiguity leaves open the possibility for Verstappen to join Mercedes in 2027, as his current contract with Red Bull runs until the end of 2028 but is believed to include performance clauses.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “Confirming our driver line-up was always just a matter of when, not if. We wanted to take our time, handle the negotiations properly and make sure everyone, on all sides, was happy. I’m pleased we have done that.”

Drivers Reflect on Their Future with Mercedes

The announcement comes on the heels of Russell’s fifth career victory in Formula 1, achieved at the recent Singapore Grand Prix. The 27-year-old British driver has also secured seven pole positions, 23 podium finishes, and one Sprint victory throughout his seven seasons in the sport.

“I am really proud to be continuing our journey together,” Russell commented. “Next year will mark my 10th since I signed with Mercedes back in 2017. It has been such a long and successful partnership with the team so far, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead, particularly as we embark on one of the largest regulation changes in the sport’s history next year.”

Antonelli, a 19-year-old Italian rookie, has faced a challenging inaugural season. Despite being touted as a generational talent, he has struggled to meet the high expectations set for him after stepping into the seat formerly held by Lewis Hamilton, who moved to Ferrari.

Throughout the current season, Russell has consistently outperformed Antonelli, earning 237 world championship points compared to Antonelli’s 88. Concerns regarding Antonelli’s performance grew during a mid-season slump, but recent top-five finishes in the last two races have provided some relief.

“I’m super excited to be continuing with the team,” Antonelli said. “I’ve learnt so much in my first season in F1, both in the good moments and the more challenging ones. Those have all made me stronger, not only as a driver but as a team-mate, too.”

Upcoming Races and Future Prospects

With the driver line-up secured, Mercedes now turns its attention to the final six races of the season, where they aim to secure a strong finish in the constructors’ championship. The next challenge is the United States Grand Prix, scheduled for October 17-19, 2023, in Austin, Texas.

As the team prepares for this critical phase, the focus remains on maximizing performance and leveraging the upcoming regulatory changes to remain competitive in the sport. The excitement surrounding the 2026 season is palpable, as both drivers look to build on their experiences and successes with Mercedes.
