University of San Francisco Athletic Director Larry Williams Dies at 62
Larry Williams, the athletic director for the University of San Francisco (USF), passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 62 while exercising at the school’s War Memorial Gym. His sudden death was confirmed by the university, which expressed deep condolences to his family and the entire USF community.
In an open letter, USF President Salvador D. Aceves extended thoughts and prayers to Williams’ wife, Laura, their children Kristin, Sean, Scott, Eric, and Louis, and his grandchildren. Aceves also emphasized the impact of Williams’ leadership on the university’s approximately 250 student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
Williams, originally from Orange, California, had an impressive career both as an athlete and administrator. He played eight seasons in the National Football League (NFL) as an offensive guard for teams including the Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and New England Patriots. Drafted in the 10th round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Browns, Williams was a talented player who earned recognition as a two-time second-team All-American while at Notre Dame.
After his playing career, Williams pursued a law degree from the University of San Diego. He dedicated over a decade to the athletic department at Notre Dame, where he made significant contributions. His administrative journey included serving as the athletic director at the University of Portland in 2004, followed by similar roles at Marquette from 2011 to 2013, and at Akron from 2015 to 2021.
At USF, Williams took the helm of the athletic department in August 2022, succeeding Joan McDermott, who resigned amid legal challenges involving the baseball and women’s basketball programs, alongside allegations of misconduct within the soccer team.
In light of Williams’ passing, Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, the deputy athletics director for administration and facilities, has stepped in as the interim athletic director.
This sudden loss marks a significant moment for USF, as the community reflects on Williams’ contributions and the legacy he leaves behind in collegiate athletics. His leadership and passion for sports will be remembered by those who knew him and those who were part of his professional journey.
