SpaceX Prepares Starship Version 3 for Upcoming Orbital Tests

On October 13, 2023, SpaceX successfully launched the final flight of Starship Version 2, concluding its nearly two-year testing phase. The launch, which marked the 11th suborbital test flight, paves the way for the next iteration of the rocket, known as Starship Version 3, slated for its debut in 2026. This upgraded vehicle is designed to enhance payload capacity and support missions to the Moon and Mars.

Advancements in Starship Version 3

Starship Version 3 will be approximately 1.5 meters taller and equipped with improved Raptor engines, making it more efficient and powerful. The enhancements include the capability to carry additional propellant and new docking adapters for in-orbit fuel transfer. This development is crucial as SpaceX aims to conduct orbital tests and operational missions beyond low Earth orbit.

During the final test of Version 2, SpaceX executed various in-flight demonstrations, including the deployment of eight Starlink simulators, showcasing the rocket’s capabilities. Although the last two flights of Version 2 were successful, they followed a series of challenges that affected earlier missions this year. Despite this turbulent history, SpaceX now focuses on refining its next-generation Starship.

“Focus now turns to the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy, with multiple vehicles currently in active build and preparing for tests,” stated SpaceX in a recent announcement. The company emphasizes that Version 3 will facilitate the first Starship orbital flights and introduce capabilities for propellant transfer.

Preparing for Future Missions

Among the significant upgrades, SpaceX is also incorporating energy storage enhancements and extensive avionics changes to support longer-duration missions. In a webcast during the 11th test flight, SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot highlighted the importance of the new docking adapters, which will enable two Starships to connect for propellant transfer in space. This capability is a core feature that SpaceX plans to demonstrate in the coming year.

Addressing the transition to Version 3, SpaceX founder Elon Musk acknowledged the challenges of implementing a radical redesign. He noted in a September interview that “pretty much everything changes on the rocket with version 3,” suggesting potential initial difficulties as the company works to refine the new design. Musk previously expressed a desire to send an uncrewed Starship to Mars in a launch window next year, although it remains uncertain if the rocket will be ready for such a mission.

As SpaceX moves forward, the anticipation surrounding Starship Version 3 continues to grow. The advancements made in this iteration could significantly impact the future of space exploration, allowing for missions that extend humanity’s reach to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
