HBO Max Increases Subscription Prices for Third Consecutive Year
HBO Max has announced a price increase for its subscription plans, marking the third consecutive year of hikes for the streaming service. Effective immediately for new customers and from November 20, 2023, for existing subscribers, the new pricing reflects the ongoing trend of rising costs across the streaming industry.
Subscribers to the Basic with Ads package will see their monthly fee rise by $1, bringing the cost to $10.99 per month and $109.99 for an annual subscription. The Standard ad-free plan will increase from $16.99 to $18.49 monthly, and from $169.99 to $184.99 annually. The Premium subscription, which offers 4K streaming, will now cost $22.99 per month, up from $20.99, and $184.99 annually, up from $169.99.
For those who subscribe to the bundled package of Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO Max, the prices will also see a significant increase. The monthly fee for the ad-supported option will rise by $3, from $16.99 to $19.99. The mostly ad-free subscription will increase from $29.99 to $32.99.
The rationale behind the price adjustments was highlighted by HBO Max’s CEO, David Zaslav, who described the service as “way underpriced.” Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference last month, he emphasized the quality of HBO Max’s content, stating, “The fact that this is quality — and that’s true across our company, motion picture, TV production and streaming quality — we all think that gives us a chance to raise price.”
This latest price hike reflects a broader trend within the streaming market, where services are increasingly raising prices in response to rising production costs and a competitive landscape. As streaming platforms continue to invest heavily in original content, these adjustments may become a common occurrence.
With the introduction of these new rates, HBO Max joins several other streaming services that have increased subscription costs in recent years. As consumers navigate these changes, the impact on subscriber retention and market competition will be pivotal in the coming months.
