Gen X Couples ‘Rightsize’ to Vibrant Community in Sleepy Hollow
UPDATE: Two empty-nester couples from Westchester County have made headlines by choosing to ‘rightsize’ their lives in a new mixed-use development in Sleepy Hollow, New York. As the demand for vibrant, community-oriented living spaces grows, the Falks and the Coopermans are setting the trend for Gen Xers seeking active lifestyles without sacrificing the comforts of suburbia.
In the spring of 2024, as their children headed to college, both couples began contemplating their next steps. The Falks, led by Stephanie and Andrew, sought to trade their century-old home for a more urban setting, while the Coopermans were on a similar journey. Their discussions ignited a shared vision of community living that would fulfill both couples’ dreams.
After exploring various options, they discovered the Edge-on-Hudson development, a project set to transform the 70-acre site of a former GM assembly plant into a vibrant neighborhood. The couples were drawn to the promise of accessible, spacious townhomes priced from $1.6 million, ideally located near the Hudson River and local amenities.
The Falks and the Coopermans, both in their mid-to-late 50s, are not ready to retire. Stephanie runs a mindfulness business called Pause to be Present, while Judy works remotely in administrative management. Their husbands also have established careers in real estate and law. This shared commitment to professional and personal growth underscores their decision to move into a community that fosters connection.
As they transition, both families have temporarily moved into rental apartments at Edge-on-Hudson, where they will reside until their townhomes are completed. The excitement of welcoming new neighbors fuels their enthusiasm. “We’re right-sizing,” Stephanie explains, emphasizing the shift towards a lifestyle that prioritizes community engagement over traditional downsizing.
With nearly 1,200 future homes planned, including townhomes, condos, and apartments, Edge-on-Hudson is poised to become a lively hub. The development promises shared amenities such as parks and a grocery store, encouraging social interaction among residents. Judy notes, “It’s like going to college when you’re a freshman; everyone wants to meet people.”
Their journey resonates with many Gen X and boomer homeowners who are hesitant to move into retirement communities but are eager for the next chapter. As housing markets remain competitive, these couples illustrate a growing trend towards finding balance between space and community.
Both the Coopermans and the Falks are already experiencing the benefits of their decision. They find joy in the ease of meeting for casual walks and socializing with neighbors. “People are friendly. It’s kind of like a fresh start,” Judy shares, highlighting the excitement of forging new friendships.
As they settle into their rental apartments, this vibrant community is set to thrive, proving that ‘rightsizing’ can lead to fulfilling, engaging lifestyles for those ready to embrace change. Keep an eye on Edge-on-Hudson as it develops into a beacon for active, community-oriented living in New York.
