Trump Aims for Trade Deal with China During Asia Trip
President Donald Trump is poised to arrive in Japan as part of his ongoing Asia trip, where he aims to strengthen trade relations and advance significant agreements. The visit comes at a pivotal moment for new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who assumed office just last week. Takaichi seeks to foster a personal rapport with Trump to mitigate ongoing trade tensions between the two nations.
Before heading to Japan, Trump spent Sunday in Malaysia, participating in a regional summit of Southeast Asian countries. During this summit, he secured preliminary trade agreements with several nations, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. En route to Japan, Trump addressed reporters aboard Air Force One, expressing optimism about the “great friendship” between the United States and Japan.
“I hear phenomenal things about Takaichi,” Trump stated, referencing her close ties to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom he maintained a strong relationship during his first term. Trump remarked, “It’s going to be very good. That really helps Japan and the United States.”
Trump’s agenda includes discussions on a potential trade deal with China. On Sunday, officials from both countries indicated that they had reached an initial consensus, paving the way for Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to finalize agreements at an upcoming meeting. “I have a lot of respect for President Xi,” Trump said, expressing confidence that they would secure a deal.
Additionally, Trump mentioned he might sign a final agreement regarding TikTok during this trip, with details expected to be confirmed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on “Face the Nation” earlier on Sunday. Bessent indicated that the TikTok deal, which was announced last month, is set to be finalized during the Trump-Xi meeting.
Following his stop in Japan, Trump will conclude his Asian tour in South Korea. There, he is anticipated to meet with Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Trump has also indicated a willingness to extend his trip if it allows for a discussion with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “If he wants to meet, I’ll be in South Korea,” Trump noted, despite previous overtures to reconnect with Kim going unanswered.
While trade remains at the forefront of Trump’s discussions, he also addressed domestic political ambitions. He dismissed the notion of seeking the vice presidency as a means to regain the presidency, stating, “I’d be allowed to do it but wouldn’t because it’s too cute.” Trump’s comments followed speculation from allies like Steve Bannon, who suggested the president could serve a third term, despite constitutional limitations.
On a broader scale, Trump’s focus on trade reflects his commitment to the “America First” policy, which often involves imposing tariffs on imports from both allies and adversaries. His unilateral authority to enact tariffs is currently under scrutiny, with a pending Supreme Court decision that could either affirm or restrict his power in this regard.
During his travels, Trump has also expressed support for fellow libertarian leader, Javier Milei, the President of Argentina, praising his government’s performance in recent midterm elections. Trump highlighted the administration’s financial support, including a $20 billion credit swap line, aimed at stabilizing Argentina’s economy.
As Trump navigates these complex international relationships and trade negotiations, his Asia trip underscores the interconnectedness of global trade dynamics and the challenges of maintaining diplomatic relations in an increasingly competitive economic landscape.
