Aurora Holiday Food Drive Kicks Off with Urgent Need for Support

UPDATE: The 18th annual Aurora Holiday Food Drive kicks off this Saturday, running until November 26, just before Thanksgiving. This year’s theme of renewal comes with pressing urgency as the community faces rising needs amid economic challenges.
The Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, which assists over 1,500 families weekly, highlights the critical nature of this drive. Executive Director Katie Arko states, “It’s a very grassroots food drive. It brings in a lot of food for us,” emphasizing the vital role this initiative plays in restocking the pantry’s shelves during the holidays.
Adding to the excitement, longtime supporter Prisco’s Family Market, located at 1108 Prairie St., Aurora, has just reopened after extensive storm damage, making its participation in this year’s drive even more meaningful. Owner Andy Guzauskas purchased food for the drive back in August, saying, “November is too important of a month – for the food pantry and the community – to not be open.”
This year’s drive addresses a troubling trend: traditional resources for the pantry are dwindling as economic pressures mount. “The price of groceries remains high, jobs are tough right now,” Arko explains, noting the snowball effect on families in need.
Volunteers are essential for the drive’s success. The pantry seeks individuals to help distribute flyers and collect food at various grocery stores, including Cermak Fresh Market and Food Market La Chiquita. Arko stresses, “We look for creative ways to make sure people don’t do without,” as the pantry’s delivery service has increased and more volunteers are required to meet demand.
Shoppers can contribute by purchasing $5, $10, or $15 bags of groceries at participating stores. Additionally, donations can be made online at www.aurorafoodpantry.org/holidayfooddrive/.
The drive is supported by numerous local businesses and individuals, including Dolan & Murphy, Aetna, and Mercy Medical Center, showcasing a community united in support of those in need.
As the need for assistance grows, the Aurora Holiday Food Drive is more than just a seasonal event; it’s a lifeline for families struggling to make ends meet. Community members are urged to act now and contribute to this essential cause.
Stay tuned for more updates as the drive progresses and the community rallies to support those in need this holiday season.
