UPDATE: Costco has urgently expanded its recall of Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene due to safety concerns, affecting over 941,400 bottles. The announcement was made on November 6, 2025, revealing that certain bottles may spontaneously shatter, posing serious injury risks to consumers.

This recall comes after an initial alert in September, where approximately 400,000 bottles were identified as potentially hazardous. The updated recall now includes unopened bottles that can explode without any external force, making it a significant safety concern for customers across the United States.

The affected Prosecco is packaged in a green bottle with a purple foil top, labeled as “Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG,” with the UPC code 196633883742. This product was sold in several states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, from April 2025 through August 2025.

Costco advises customers who believe they have purchased affected bottles not to open them. Instead, they should follow these safety measures to avoid injury from potential glass shards:

1. **Do not open the bottle** under any circumstances.
2. **Wrap the unopened bottle** in paper towels.
3. **Place it inside a thick plastic bag**.
4. **Dispose of it in regular household garbage**. Do not return it to Costco.

Customers are encouraged to keep their recall notice and bring it to Costco for a refund, even if they no longer have the bottle or receipt. Those injured by the glass or cork are advised to seek medical attention and document the incident for potential claims.

For further information, Costco members can contact Ethica Wines at 786-810-7132 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday, or reach them via email at [email protected].

This expanding recall underscores the critical importance of consumer safety and the need for vigilance when purchasing food and beverage products. Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops.
