Kathy Griffin Celebrated as LGBTQ+ Advocate of the Year at Out100 Event
The Out100 party, held on November 10, 2023, in Los Angeles, honored Kathy Griffin as the LGBTQ+ community’s Advocate of the Year. The award was presented by the acclaimed singer Sia during a festive evening at Sia at nya Studios West, where notable figures gathered to celebrate achievements in the community.
During the ceremony, Sia praised Griffin, stating, “She’s my friend, she’s an excellent person, and she saved my life.” To further commemorate the occasion, Sia performed her uplifting anthem “Unstoppable,” creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with support and admiration.
Griffin’s Message of Resilience
In her acceptance speech, Griffin expressed profound gratitude towards the queer community for their unwavering support, particularly during challenging times. She reflected on her own experiences after facing backlash for her controversial interaction with former President Donald Trump. “There was a term in my day called f— hag,” Griffin remarked, adding, “We won’t say the f-a-g word anymore but, honey, I am the OG hag. I know all of you. We go back. We have a relationship.”
Griffin emphasized the importance of political engagement, urging attendees to become active participants in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. “This is a tough time, so I have to tell you please become as politically engaged as you can. Please. It’s so important because I worry about you guys and I worry about an America where it may not even be safe to walk down the street as a gay person,” she stated passionately.
Recognizing Other Honorees
Alongside Griffin, the event also celebrated other influential figures in the LGBTQ+ community. Niecy Nash-Betts, who was unable to attend due to filming commitments in Atlanta, accepted the Icon Award via a video message, acknowledging the ongoing fight for equality.
Additionally, Miles Heizer, known for his role in the series “Boots,” received recognition as one of the Out100 honorees, further highlighting the diverse talent and voices within the LGBTQ+ landscape.
The Out100 party not only served as a platform for honoring exemplary figures but also as a reminder of the unity and resilience within the LGBTQ+ community. With powerful performances and heartfelt speeches, the evening underscored the ongoing journey toward equality and acceptance.
As the night concluded, attendees reflected on the importance of solidarity and commitment in navigating the complexities of today’s social climate. The Out100 celebration stands as a testament to the strength of community and the enduring spirit of advocacy.
