CU Buffs Soccer Advances to Sweet 16 with Thrilling Win
UPDATE: The Colorado Buffaloes women’s soccer team has secured a spot in the Sweet 16 after a commanding 3-0 victory over Xavier in the NCAA Tournament. This marks the Buffs’ first Sweet 16 appearance since 2013, and they are poised for a high-stakes showdown against the second-seeded Michigan State Spartans on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 11 a.m. MT in East Lansing, Michigan.
In a stunning display of skill, Hope Leyba capped the Buffs’ victory with a jaw-dropping 40-yard strike in the 87th minute, solidifying their lead and electrifying fans. “What a classy goal from Hope,” remarked Coach Danny Sanchez, who has guided the team to two of its three Sweet 16 berths. “It took the pressure off us late in the game.”
The Buffs, seeded third, are now looking to achieve their first Elite Eight berth against a formidable opponent in Michigan State, who boasts a strong season record of 14-3-6. The teams previously met this season, ending in a 1-1 draw in August, setting the stage for an intense rematch.
Historically, the Buffs have struggled in NCAA road games, with a 2-10 record, but they are determined to change that narrative. The team is fueled by the desire to create lasting memories for their seniors, including Jordie Nytes, Emerson Layne, and Greer Maguire. “For our seniors, this opportunity is tremendous,” Sanchez stated, emphasizing the significance of this moment for the players.
Fans can expect a fierce battle as the Buffs prepare to face off against the Spartans, who are known for their sharp offensive skills. Key players to watch include Leyba, who has already scored 22 goals this season, and Michigan State’s Kennedy Bell, who has netted 11 goals.
The stakes are high, and the Buffs aim to advance further in the tournament. A victory on Sunday could lead to another potential match at home if top-seeded Stanford falls to BYU. All eyes will be on the pitch as Colorado seeks to make history.
Stay tuned for updates and join the excitement as the CU Buffs aim for a monumental victory!
