Ohio State’s Caden Curry, Max Klare, and Bo Jackson Shine in Victory
Ohio State University secured a decisive 42-9 victory over Rutgers on September 30, 2023, with standout performances from Caden Curry, Max Klare, and Bo Jackson, who earned recognition as the Buckeyes’ top players of the game. The trio’s contributions were instrumental in the team’s success, showcasing both individual talent and collective effort.
Caden Curry’s Defensive Dominance
Caden Curry, a defensive end for Ohio State, delivered a remarkable performance that highlighted his versatility and impact on the field. He recorded a team-high six tackles, including two for loss, and achieved two sacks. Furthermore, Curry forced a fumble and recovered it, demonstrating his ability to create turnovers. Despite the referees ruling that he was down at the 1-yard line after stripping Rutgers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, his efforts were crucial in keeping Rutgers’ offense in check.
Curry’s season statistics reflect his consistent dominance; he now boasts a total of 49 tackles and leads the Buckeyes in both tackles for loss and sacks. His contributions extend beyond just tackles, as he has also achieved a pass breakup, forced another fumble, and even blocked a punt.
Max Klare’s Impact on Offense
Tight end Max Klare played a pivotal role in the offensive strategy, leading all Ohio State pass catchers with seven receptions for 105 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Sayin. Klare’s performance came at a crucial time, especially with key players like Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith, and Quincy Porter sidelined due to injuries.
His 100-yard game marked a significant milestone, being only the sixth time an Ohio State tight end has reached this benchmark since 1960, and the first instance since Jeff Heuerman’s 116-yard game against Purdue in 2013. Since Tate’s injury, Klare has stepped into a more prominent role, collecting 17 catches for 190 yards over that span, averaging nearly six receptions and 63 yards per game.
Bo Jackson Powers the Rushing Attack
Freshman running back Bo Jackson also made headlines with an impressive performance, recording a season-high 19 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns. His contributions significantly bolstered Ohio State’s rushing attack, which totaled 254 yards against one of the weaker run defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
In addition to Jackson’s efforts, teammates Isaiah West and James Peoples also contributed to the ground game, with West adding eight carries for 48 yards and Peoples breaking free for a 49-yard touchdown as part of a three-carry, 55-yard outing. Backup quarterback Lincoln Kienholz further enhanced the rushing statistics with three carries for 37 yards.
As the season progresses, the performances of Curry, Klare, and Jackson will be closely monitored, particularly in the context of Ohio State’s ongoing campaign. The Buckeyes’ stars accumulate points based on their game performances, with the First Star of the Game earning three points, the Second Star receiving two points, and the Third Star gaining one point toward their season totals.
The contributions of these players not only reflect their personal achievements but also highlight Ohio State’s depth and resilience as they navigate the challenges of the season.
