Honda Recalls Over 400,000 Civics Due to Wheel Detachment Risk

Honda has announced a major recall impacting more than 400,000 Civic vehicles manufactured between 2016 and 2021. The recall, initiated on October 31, 2025, is due to a defect that poses a serious safety risk: the potential for the wheel to detach while driving. The issue stems from improperly pressed steel seat anchors for the aluminum wheels, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The defect means that the wheel nut may become loose, increasing the risk of a wheel detachment. Such an event could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle, significantly raising the chances of an accident or injury. Honda has stated that they will inspect all affected vehicles free of charge at authorized dealerships.

Details of the Recall and Affected Models

The discovery of this problem dates back to a routine inspection in Japan in 2024. It was identified that some unfinished wheels had been mistakenly shipped as finished products due to an incident at a supplier’s factory in Italy. Honda’s investigation revealed that this factory flaw affected a significant number of Civics, prompting the recall.

Starting October 31, Honda began notifying vehicle owners about the potential risks associated with their cars. Owners are expected to receive communication by December 8. Those who wish to confirm if their vehicle is affected can do so by entering their vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website. Honda has also established a customer service line at 1-888-234-2138 for further assistance.

Safety Measures and Customer Support

Despite the seriousness of the defect, Honda has not reported any injuries related to this issue as of now, according to information from Top Class Actions. The company is not facing any class-action lawsuits concerning this specific defect. However, it is currently entangled in a separate legal issue regarding warranty claims for defective 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines found in various models including the Honda Accord, Civic, and CR-V from the years 2016 to 2022.

As the recall unfolds, Honda emphasizes the importance of vehicle safety and encourages all affected owners to take prompt action to have their vehicles inspected. The company is committed to resolving this issue and ensuring that all recalled vehicles meet the necessary safety standards.
