Joey McGuire Earns Region 4 AFCA Coach of the Year Honors
Joey McGuire, head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, has been named the Region Four Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). This recognition, announced on November 28, 2023, places McGuire among five regional winners who will compete for the prestigious AFCA National Coach of the Year award. The other finalists include Brent Key of Georgia Tech, Clark Lea of Vanderbilt, Curt Cignetti of Indiana, and Timmy Chang from Hawaii.
Under McGuire’s leadership, Texas Tech has achieved an impressive record of 10-1 as they approach their final regular-season game. This performance positions them to potentially secure their first Big 12 Championship berth since joining the conference in 1996. The last time the Red Raiders reached double-digit wins was in 2008.
Outstanding Defensive Performance
McGuire’s coaching prowess is evident in the remarkable performance of his defensive unit, which ranks among the best in the nation. Led by linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and edge rusher David Bailey, Texas Tech currently holds the top spot in the country for run defense. Additionally, the team ranks in the top five for scoring defense, showcasing a well-rounded approach to the game.
The synergy between the Red Raiders’ high-scoring offense—currently ranked third nationally—and their formidable defense has been key to their success. Texas Tech has won all ten of its games by a margin of 22 points or more, a record that ties for the most significant victory margins by a team in the history of the Big 12, according to conference records.
National Recognition and Future Prospects
As Texas Tech continues its strong season, they are ranked No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings, further solidifying their status as a contender in college football. Beyond the AFCA recognition, McGuire is also being considered for the Dodd Trophy and the Bear Bryant Awards, which honor excellence in coaching.
The Red Raiders’ remarkable season has not only elevated the program’s profile but also highlighted McGuire’s ability to lead and inspire his team. With the potential for a championship on the horizon, Texas Tech fans are eager to see how the remainder of the season unfolds.
