San Antonio Food Bank Gears Up for Thanksgiving with Turkey Trot
The San Antonio Food Bank is poised for a busy Thanksgiving season, hosting its annual Turkey Trot 5K on the morning of November 23, 2023, and a holiday meal for residents at the Haven for Hope campus later that same day. Both events are designed to raise funds and provide hot meals for those in need, reflecting the organization’s commitment to addressing food insecurity in the community.
Turkey Trot 5K: A Community Tradition
The 16th annual Turkey Trot 5K Run & Walk is set to kick off at 08:30 at the Commander’s House at the H-E-B Arsenal, located at 622 S. Flores St. This year, registration fees will directly support the provision of turkeys for families in need. Organizers anticipate a turnout of approximately 6,000 participants. Detailed information regarding packet pick-up times, parking options, and a race route that highlights downtown landmarks has been made available to participants.
The Turkey Trot not only serves as a festive community gathering but also plays a crucial role in funding the Food Bank’s initiatives. By encouraging early registration, organizers aim to streamline the race day experience and reduce congestion.
Thanksgiving Meal at Haven for Hope
Following the Turkey Trot, the culinary team from the San Antonio Food Bank will focus on preparing and serving a Thanksgiving lunch for hundreds of residents at the Haven for Hope campus, beginning around 11:00. This partnership, which has become a staple of holiday meal services, ensures that those facing homelessness or food insecurity receive a warm meal during the festive season.
Volunteers and corporate partners typically contribute their time and resources to facilitate the smooth operation of the lunch service, further highlighting the community spirit that defines these holiday events.
The Food Bank is also offering curbside pantry pickups at its Old Highway 90 location, with slots available on November 25 and 26 from 14:00 to 16:00. Information regarding packet pick-up and volunteer registration for the Turkey Trot is accessible on the Food Bank’s website, which encourages participants to register in advance to ease the process on race day.
The significance of these events extends beyond tradition. According to the San Antonio Express-News, they address the increasing demand for emergency food assistance in Bexar County, particularly as federal benefits and other support programs undergo changes.
In light of this growing need, organizers are actively encouraging donations and volunteer participation to sustain services throughout the holiday season and beyond. The San Antonio Food Bank’s efforts exemplify the essential role of community support in combating food insecurity, ensuring that many families can enjoy a fulfilling Thanksgiving this year.
