Austin Radio Duo Double Heads to Host Unique Live Show
In a bold move to energize the local arts scene, Austin-based radio duo Matt Fox and Dillon Minacci, known as Double Heads, will host a live show at the Hyperreal Film Club on December 4, 2024. This marks the fifth installment of their experimental late-night talk show, which has gained a dedicated following through its quirky blend of improvisation and audience interaction.
Unlike their traditional radio program on KOOP Radio, which airs from 18:00 to 19:00, this performance invites audience members to actively participate. At Double Heads LIVE! You’re the Host V, attendees will have the chance to deliver monologues and conduct interviews in an unscripted format. This approach aims to create a dynamic atmosphere where the unpredictable nature of live performance takes center stage.
Shifting Venues and Keeping Austin Weird
Previously hosted at the Carousel Lounge, a well-loved local bar, the duo has chosen the Hyperreal Film Club for this event. Known for its eclectic programming and artistic vibe, the venue is expected to enhance the experience for both performers and audience members. In an official statement, Double Heads expressed their excitement: “We are honored to be partnering with Hyperreal Film Club on such an important event. We’ve purchased numerous props and learned how to make fake glass for this fifth installment, so Austinites will not want to miss this one-night-only spectacle.”
While the radio show often features a mix of music from various genres, teasers for the live event do not indicate any musical performances. Instead, they emphasize the improvisational aspect that has become a hallmark of the Double Heads experience. Their unique format has garnered attention and loyalty from listeners, as evidenced by their recent nomination for Best Radio Personality in the Austin Chronicle‘s 2024-2025 Austin Music Awards.
As the Chronicle gears up for this year’s awards, Double Heads took to social media to encourage nominations, humorously noting, “This one is the ~*music industry*~ one so the only people who can nominate are ~*industry professionals*~. If the Chronicle deemed you worthy, you should have the invite in your inbox, and if they didn’t deem you worthy, it likely means you have a more stable life/income than we do. So congrats on that, I guess?”
Details for Attendees
Tickets for the event are available on a pay-what-you-can basis, ranging from $8 to $15. The doors at the Hyperreal Film Club, located at 301 Chicon Street, will open at 19:00, with the show set to start at 19:30. This event promises to provide a memorable evening filled with laughter and creativity, embodying the spirit of Austin’s vibrant arts community.
With their innovative approach and commitment to engaging audiences, Double Heads continues to push the boundaries of community radio and live performance. Their upcoming show represents a unique opportunity for attendees to become part of a truly interactive experience.
