Karolina Wydra Offers Insight on ‘Pluribus’ Season One Finale
In the wake of the season one finale of the series Pluribus, star Karolina Wydra shared her perspective on the ambiguous conclusion of the season, which aired on October 15, 2023. Wydra, who portrays Zosia, expressed an optimistic interpretation of her character’s complicated relationship with Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehorn. Despite the tension created by Zosia’s compliance with a request for an atomic bomb, Wydra believes that a glimmer of hope remains for the future of their relationship.
The finale, titled “La Chica o El Mundo,” left viewers with significant questions following a pivotal moment between Zosia and Carol. Wydra noted that their parting glance suggested some uncertainty from Carol about escalating the conflict. “What [the parting glance] was for me is that maybe there’s somehow still a chance [to reconsider],” Wydra explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She emphasized that this was not a definitive farewell but rather an invitation for reflection on Carol’s choices.
In a dramatic turn of events set in Big Sky, Montana, the relationship between Zosia and Carol faced new challenges as Carol discovered Zosia and the Joined’s plans to convert her into one of them. Wydra reflected on the intimate moments shared by the characters, which were underscored by tension and manipulation. “Vince and I talked about how they’re not manipulative and Zosia is not sinister,” she stated, affirming that Zosia’s intentions stem from a genuine desire to make Carol happy.
The finale recontextualized earlier episodes, particularly one where Zosia and Carol shared a kiss after Zosia rebuilt a diner that held sentimental value for Carol. The kiss, Wydra suggested, could be interpreted in various ways—either as a moment of connection or a distraction from the impending troubles. “Is that kiss because Zosia is separating a little bit from the collective?” she pondered. “Or is Zosia just really trying to make Carol happy?”
There is a complexity to the characters, as Wydra indicated that the Joined’s programming might prevent them from recognizing manipulative behaviors. Vince Gilligan, the show’s creator, supported this view in a separate interview, suggesting that manipulation can often occur unconsciously in real life.
As Wydra delves deeper into her character’s backstory, she reveals that Zosia’s Polish heritage was incorporated after she was cast. This change added layers to Zosia’s identity, allowing for moments of vulnerability that connect her past with her present. Wydra recalls a scene where Zosia describes her childhood in Gdańsk, Poland, reflecting on simpler times and the struggles of growing up in scarcity. “For me, it came from a pure place of connection and sharing of oneself,” she remarked.
The emotional weight of the season finale was palpable on set, especially during scenes that mirrored real-life events that impacted the crew, such as the health scare involving actor Bob Odenkirk on the set of Better Call Saul. Wydra noted that the atmosphere during filming was tinged with melancholy, as the crew and extras engaged deeply with the emotional stakes of the narrative.
As fans await the second season of Pluribus, which is now streaming on Apple TV, Wydra expressed excitement for the unfolding storylines, stating that she discovered plot developments alongside viewers. “I love that Vince is going to write the [second] season before we’ll get to know something,” she said, highlighting the collaborative nature of the production.
With its complex characters and intricate plotlines, Pluribus continues to engage audiences, prompting discussions about the nature of relationships, manipulation, and the ethical dilemmas faced by its characters.
