Laughter Takes Center Stage at UH Hilo with “Inspecting Carol”
The University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center is set to present the comedic play “Inspecting Carol” this weekend, bringing a dose of humor to its 2025-26 season. The play, written by Daniel J. Sullivan in 1991 and first produced by the Seattle Repertory Theatre, reflects the current challenges faced by many small theater companies, particularly concerning funding.
The production, directed by Justina Mattos, dives into the chaotic world of a struggling theater company preparing for its annual performance of “A Christmas Carol.” According to Lee Dombroski, the manager of the UH Performing Arts Center, the play resonates deeply with the real-life budgetary issues that many theaters are experiencing today. Dombroski noted in a September interview with the Tribune-Herald, “It’s about a small theater company that is having a rough time. It’s very apropos,” referencing recent federal cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
In the story, the theater company mistakenly believes a random visitor is the NEA inspector, leading to a series of comedic blunders as they strive to impress the wrong person. The company, under significant pressure, resorts to using outdated costumes and scenery, with only four days of rehearsal before the big performance. “Everything that can go wrong does, and it all happens in front of the real NEA inspector,” Dombroski remarked. “It’s a real hoot.”
Performances of “Inspecting Carol” will take place at 19:00 on both Friday and Saturday, with a final matinee at 14:00 on Sunday. Ticket prices are set at $20 for general admission, $15 for faculty, staff, alumni, and kupuna, and $10 for children aged 17 and under, as well as students from UH Hilo or Hawaii Community College with valid ID.
For those interested in attending, tickets can be purchased through the official website at https://tinyurl.com/2v9jduyt or by calling the box office at (808) 932-7290. As laughter and entertainment take center stage, “Inspecting Carol” promises to offer an enjoyable experience for all.
