Paulina Chavez Discusses Heartbreaking Breakup in ‘Landman’
The latest episode of the hit series Landman delivered an unexpected emotional twist, as the characters Ariana, played by Paulina Chavez, and Cooper, portrayed by Jacob Lofland, ended their romantic relationship. This pivotal moment aired on Sunday, November 16, 2023, and has sparked significant discussion among fans.
In the episode, Ariana grapples with her feelings after a worrying incident when Cooper’s phone dies while he is at work. Her deep concern for his safety forces Ariana to confront her past, particularly the tragic loss of her late husband, Elvio. With emotions running high, she expresses to Cooper that she cannot endure another loss, leading to their heartbreaking breakup. Cooper, who is experiencing newfound success in the oil industry, accepts Ariana’s decision, although a conversation with Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton, suggests that reconciliation may still be a possibility.
Reflecting on Ariana’s decision, Chavez shared her insights with Us Weekly. “I really think she was, obviously, taken aback. The stakes are so much higher now,” she noted, emphasizing Ariana’s awareness of the risks associated with Cooper’s work in the oil sector. “She realizes what’s at stake with her partner working in the oil industry, and she doesn’t want history to repeat itself.”
While Ariana is focused on her own healing, she remains considerate of Cooper’s feelings. Chavez elaborated, “Ariana wants him to be happy and do what he wants. If that means us breaking up, then that’s what needs to happen.”
Despite the breakup, Chavez is optimistic about the couple’s future. She describes their relationship as one that embodies open communication and the pursuit of improvement. “I’m a hopeless romantic, so I’m definitely in it with their relationship,” she said, expressing her desire for Ariana and Cooper to ultimately find their way back to one another.
As this season progresses, Chavez has delved deeper into her character, portraying Ariana as “stronger, bolder, and more unapologetically herself.” This new direction allows audiences to connect with her on a more profound level as she navigates motherhood and personal aspirations.
Chavez, who is not a mother herself, draws inspiration from her family’s experiences. She frequently assists her older sister, who welcomed her second son in January 2025. “It’s been like a tradition that I just go out and help [my sister],” Chavez explained. She has even taken on night shifts to assist with the demands of a newborn, describing her experience as a “love letter” to Latina women, mothers, and those navigating the complexities of new love after loss.
New episodes of Landman are available on Paramount+ every Sunday at 03:00 ET, ensuring viewers can keep up with the evolving dynamics of this gripping series.
