Nemours Children’s Health Launches Equine Therapy Program in Jacksonville
Nemours Children’s Health in Jacksonville has announced a new partnership with the North Florida School of Special Education (NFSSE) to introduce an innovative equine therapy program for children undergoing animal-assisted therapy. This collaboration aims to enhance therapeutic support for young patients with chronic medical conditions through direct interaction with miniature horses.
Program Details and Benefits
The equine therapy initiative will feature visits from miniature horses from the Delores Barr Weaver Therapeutic Equestrian Center. These visits will be integrated into Nemours’ existing Assisted Dog and Pony Therapy program, which provides therapeutic activities designed to improve the emotional and physical well-being of children. With this partnership, the program guarantees consistent access to trained therapy horses and handlers, ensuring both safety and continuity of care.
According to a news release from Nemours, this collaboration not only benefits the children receiving therapy but also offers opportunities for NFSSE students to engage with health services at Nemours. This engagement promotes a model of inclusive, community-based care that emphasizes the importance of social interaction and support.
Community Support and Future Expansion
To facilitate this new program, the Rotary Club of East Arlington has generously donated a specially designed miniature horse trailer. This trailer will be used to transport therapy horses from the equestrian center to Nemours Children’s Health, thereby expanding the program’s reach within the community.
With the launch of this equine therapy initiative, both organizations aim to provide a unique therapeutic experience that can significantly impact the lives of children facing health challenges. The partnership highlights the importance of innovative treatment options and community collaboration in enhancing the quality of care for young patients.
As the program progresses, it is expected to create lasting smiles and positive outcomes for many children in Jacksonville, reinforcing the belief that therapy can take many forms, including the gentle companionship of a horse.
