A giant nativity scene, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the tallest in the world, has been re-erected in Town Hall Square in Bethlehem. This festive display marks the return of Christmas celebrations to the city after a two-year hiatus due to ongoing conflict in the region.

Originally built in 2020, the nativity set features oversized figures that include the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—along with the three wise men. The depiction of Baby Jesus measures an impressive 10 feet, 10.7 inches in height and 10 feet, 10.3 inches in width, while stretching over 13 feet in length. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is notably taller, towering at 34 feet, 8.9 inches.

The nativity scene officially opened for the season on November 23, inviting visitors to enjoy the holiday atmosphere and take photographs with the iconic figures. Social media users have expressed their admiration, with one Facebook user commenting, “It’s beautiful. It’s time we reconnect with the true meaning of Christmas.”

Cardinal Pizzaballa Leads Celebrations

The festive atmosphere in Bethlehem is further enhanced by the presence of Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. On December 23, 2023, he initiated the Christmas celebrations with a traditional procession from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. During the event, he emphasized the importance of community and hope, stating, “We, all together — we decide to be the light, and the light of Bethlehem is the light of the world.”

The celebrations in Bethlehem are particularly poignant following a period of unrest that hampered holiday festivities. Manger Square, named for the location where Jesus was laid after his birth, serves as the heart of these renewed Christmas activities. The return to normalcy is a source of joy for many local families and tourists alike, who are eager to experience the rich history and cultural significance of the city during the holiday season.

As the festive spirit fills the air, Bethlehem aims to inspire a message of peace and unity, encouraging visitors and residents to reflect on the deeper meanings of the holiday. The iconic nativity set stands as a symbol of hope and resilience, reminding all who visit of the enduring significance of Christmas.

The re-establishment of this record-breaking nativity scene is not just a spectacle but a celebration of life and faith in a city that holds profound historical and spiritual importance.
