Historian Dennis Picard to Discuss Founding Father Henry Knox
The East Longmeadow Historical Commission will host historian Dennis Picard on March 14, 2024, at 6 p.m. to speak about the life and contributions of Henry Knox, a key figure among the Founding Fathers of the United States. This event will take place at the East Longmeadow Senior Center, located at 328 North Main St., and is open to the public at no cost, with no prior registration necessary.
Remembering a Revolutionary Leader
Born in Boston, Henry Knox played a crucial role as a senior general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He served as the chief of artillery in all campaigns led by George Washington, earning a reputation for his strategic prowess. His leadership was instrumental in transporting artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, a journey referred to as the “noble train of artillery.” This operation significantly bolstered the American forces and helped turn the tide in their favor.
In modern times, Knox is commemorated through various landmarks, including Fort Knox and the Henry Knox Trail, also known as the Knox Cannon Trail. This network of roads and paths traces the route taken by Knox’s artillery, highlighting its importance to the American cause during the war.
