Historic Kitchen Transformation Blends Bold Colors with Elegance

A historic renovation at Raynham Hall has successfully transformed a once-ceremonial space into a modern family kitchen while honoring the property’s architectural legacy. The project, led by Francesca Froggatt, head kitchen designer at deVOL Kitchens, showcases how contemporary design can harmonize with traditional elements.

The Grade I listed house, significant for its national heritage, retains many original features dating back to the 1700s. This posed unique challenges for the design team, as every detail, from gilded carvings to wall paintings, had to remain untouched. “The decoration is part of the listing, meaning every surface had to stay as is,” Froggatt explains. The team undertook careful restoration, particularly of the original green wall paint, collaborating with experts from Edward Bulmer Paint to ensure historical accuracy.

With the walls restored, the focus shifted to integrating new color schemes. “The cabinetry needed real presence,” Froggatt notes, emphasizing the choice of deVOL’s Refectory Red for the furniture. This deep hue adds warmth and depth without overwhelming the historic décor. The resulting palette creates a sense of intimacy, allowing the kitchen to feel inviting despite its grandeur.

The limitations imposed by the listed status of the building extended beyond the walls. The cabinetry had to be designed to sit independently, as no fixtures could be attached to the original woodwork or stone. “Every piece had to be sympathetic to the room’s fabric,” Froggatt adds. This resulted in a layout that maximizes functionality while respecting the historical context.

The homeowners, Octavia and Tom, embraced these restrictions, opting to keep larger appliances in an adjoining pantry. This decision allowed the main kitchen to remain unobtrusive, enhancing the space’s elegance. With much of the wall space occupied by decorative features, the design team strategically placed a freestanding breakfast cupboard, ensuring the layout felt intentionally minimal.

Froggatt describes the transformation as a balance between decadence and simplicity. “The Shaker cabinet design brings functionality and calm, providing a counterpoint to the opulence of the surroundings,” she observes. The kitchen now serves as a practical space for family life while respecting the character of Raynham Hall.

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a warm atmosphere. The design team integrated large windows and carefully chosen fixtures to ensure the space feels welcoming. Wall sconces introduced soft light, further enhancing the room’s inviting nature.

The design choices also reflect a commitment to timelessness, opting for simple yet elegant pieces. The round dining table surrounded by antique chairs adds a curated touch, making the area feel more like a gathering space than a traditional kitchen.

In addition to aesthetics, the kitchen incorporates modern features discreetly, such as a hot water faucet in the pantry, providing convenience without compromising the historic integrity of the main kitchen.

The renovation at Raynham Hall exemplifies how bold color combinations can coexist with a rich historical narrative. The successful merging of contemporary design with heritage elements demonstrates that even the most spacious kitchens can feel cozy and inviting. This project serves as a significant lesson in how to approach renovations in historic settings, blending the past with the present in a respectful and engaging manner.
