Holy Family Haven Opens 72 Affordable Apartments in Clarkston
A new chapter in affordable housing has begun in Clarkston with the opening of the Holy Family Haven, featuring 72 affordable apartments. The complex, which bears the name of the local Holy Family Catholic School, was officially inaugurated with a ceremony attended by community members, city leaders, and representatives from Catholic Charities Housing.
Jonathan Mallahan, executive director of Catholic Charities Housing, highlighted the significant contribution of local students in naming the complex. Their artwork and ideas not only inspired the name but also marked the occasion with a vibrant celebration. “It was so nice to have all of the Holy Family students there to celebrate the grand opening,” Mallahan remarked.
The ceremony included a blessing from a local priest and showcased the enthusiasm of Holy Family students, who sang their school song, displayed their colorful artwork, and cheered for the new housing initiative. Located at 1411 Port Drive, Holy Family Haven aims to provide a supportive environment for families in need.
During the event, Monika Lawrence, the Mayor of Clarkston, praised the efforts of John Pilcher, executive director of the Horizon Housing Alliance, stating that he had “promised Clarkston a top-notch housing project, and he really delivered.” Pilcher emphasized that the new complex is designed to be a community rather than a shelter.
Currently, half of the apartments are occupied, and families are in the process of moving in. Mallahan noted that approximately 30% of the units are still available for those who qualify. Interested families can reach out to Catholic Charities for application details.
“This is not just a place to live,” Mallahan explained. “It’s a foundation for families to make lasting changes in their lives and achieve their goals.” The Holy Family Haven complex will not only provide housing but also a range of support services aimed at assisting families struggling financially.
The project received significant backing from KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment, which provided $31.4 million for construction. Of the 72 apartments, 70 units serve families and individuals earning between 30% to 60% of the area median income, while 35 units are reserved for individuals who have experienced homelessness.
In addition to housing, Catholic Charities is coordinating an extensive array of support services, including mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery support, transportation to medical appointments, senior assistance, and employment resources. Access to fresh, healthy food distribution is also included in the services offered to residents.
Families interested in applying for the apartments can find more information at housing.cceasternwa.org/how-to-apply. The Holy Family Haven stands as a beacon of hope and community support, aiming to uplift families and help them thrive in their new homes.
