Memory Restored: Prohibition Agent Recalls Wife After Accident
On October 23, 1923, a remarkable incident in St. Cloud, Minnesota, altered the life of federal prohibition agent Arthur E. Whitney. After suffering a skull fracture during a confrontation with a beer-stealing truck, Whitney unexpectedly regained memories lost since World War I. This incident not only brought back his recollections of his wife, Luella Whitney, but also erased all memories of his current companion, Ann Whitney.
Whitney, who served overseas in France for 27 months during the war, had been exposed to gas attacks that left him mentally disoriented and rendered significant portions of his memory inaccessible. Before the accident, his life was a blur, particularly the two years he spent in St. Paul with Ann Whitney, a woman from Escanaba, Michigan.
Upon regaining consciousness at a local hospital, Whitney was surprised to find Luella, whom he had married in Grafton, North Dakota, in 1912, at his bedside. He expressed joy and confusion when he said, “Kiss me, Luella. When are you going to take me home?” His memory of Ann, who is pregnant and was involved in ongoing divorce proceedings with him, had vanished entirely.
Whitney’s injury and subsequent recovery have opened a door to a potential reconciliation with Luella. She confirmed that she has not yet completed the legal divorce process, stating that under North Dakota law, they remain married until November 1, 1923.
As Whitney navigates this unexpected turn of events, Luella shared details about their life together, including their two sons. While she refrained from discussing the divorce proceedings, she hinted at the possibility of moving forward with her husband, suggesting she might consider the past closed and explore a renewed partnership.
Doctors have indicated that Whitney is expected to recover fully from his injury. This medical prognosis provides a glimmer of hope for both Whitney and Luella as they contemplate their future together.
Meanwhile, the whereabouts of Ann Whitney remain uncertain. She departed St. Cloud on Saturday, October 20, 1923, leaving the situation in a state of ambiguity.
The story of Arthur E. Whitney serves as a poignant reminder of how sudden events can reshape lives and relationships. As he embarks on a new chapter, the complexities of love, memory, and reconciliation come to the forefront in the wake of a tragic accident.
