Michigan Launches $2 Million Grant for 250th Anniversary Projects
As Michigan prepares for the significant milestone of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the state is offering a second round of funding through the America250MI History Grant Program. This initiative, announced by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, will allocate $2 million to support projects that explore and celebrate the state’s rich historical legacy. Applications for the grant program open on January 15, 2026, with winners expected to be announced in March 2026.
The first round of the grant program, which took place earlier this year, attracted nearly 100 applicants seeking over $2.2 million in funding. Despite the overwhelming demand, the program successfully distributed more than $967,000 across projects in over two dozen counties. The second round aims to further broaden the scope of supported initiatives, which may include educational programming, capital improvements, exhibits, and other projects that delve into Michigan’s multifaceted history.
Eligibility and Project Themes
The grant program is open to a wide range of applicants, including tribal governments, nonprofits, and local governments. All proposals must involve at least one history-focused organization. Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan History Center, highlighted the program’s potential impact, stating, “There’s always more history to explore.”
Successful projects from the first round addressed diverse topics, from World War II and Michigan shipwrecks to labor history and immigration. Larry J. Wagenaar, executive director and CEO of the Historical Society of Michigan, noted the significance of these themes, which reflect the varied narratives that shape Michigan’s identity.
The America250MI program encourages applicants to align their projects with five guiding themes: Unfinished Revolutions, Power of Place, American Experiment, We the People, and Doing History. This structure not only fosters creativity but also ensures that each project contributes meaningfully to the collective understanding of Michigan’s past.
Grant Tiers and Requirements
The grants are categorized into three tiers based on project scope and funding needs. Tier 1 offers between $2,500 and $5,000, while Tier 2 ranges from $5,001 to $25,000. The most substantial Tier 3 provides funding from $25,001 to $50,000. Notably, Tier 1 does not require matching funds, while Tiers 2 and 3 stipulate a 15% and 30% match, respectively.
This grant program represents a vital opportunity for organizations to enhance public engagement with Michigan’s history. By investing in projects that promote historical understanding, the state aims to foster a deeper connection among residents and visitors alike, ensuring that the upcoming anniversary is both a celebration and an educational experience.
Applications for this round of funding will be accepted until January 15, 2026, with the results announced in March 2026. Interested parties are encouraged to prepare their proposals early to take advantage of this significant opportunity to support Michigan’s historical narrative.
