Donald Dicklich, Esteemed Community Leader, Passes Away at 71

Donald Dicklich, a respected figure in local governance and healthcare, passed away on October 27, 2025, after a prolonged battle with esophageal cancer. He was 71 years old. Known for his dedication to both his community and family, Dicklich’s life was marked by significant achievements across various fields.

Born to Bogdan “Bob” Dicklich and Mildred Kelsey Dicklich, Donald grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota, where he attended local schools and graduated in 1971. He was a proud member of the 1970 3rd Place State Championship Hockey Team, a testament to his competitive spirit and love for sports.

After high school, Dicklich pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business. He later upgraded his qualifications by obtaining an MBA from the same institution.

In June 1975, he married Mary Zanoni, with whom he had two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele. His professional journey began at U.S. Steel Corp., where he held various positions, starting at the Mintac Mine and Plant before transitioning to the USS Great Lakes Fleet, which focused on shipping products across the Great Lakes.

Dicklich spent 14 years in healthcare administration at what is now known as Essentia Health, where he played a vital role in improving healthcare services in the region. He later served as Administrative Manager/CFO at the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, an economic development agency for the State of Minnesota.

In a significant career milestone, Dicklich was appointed as the St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer by the County Board. He was subsequently elected to three terms by the electorate, serving nearly 15 years in this capacity before retiring in January 2019. Throughout his career, he was known for his commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility.

Outside of his professional life, Dicklich was active in his community and faith. He served on several church boards, held the position of President of the Men’s Club, and was a dedicated member of his church choir for many years.

Donald Dicklich is preceded in death by his grandparents, Rade and Milica Dicklich, and Riley and Emilie Kelsey, as well as his parents. He is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, as well as his siblings, Ron (Samantha) Dicklich, Diana (Paul) Broste, and Cherilyn McEnery (friend Scott). He cherished his extended family, which includes five nieces, one nephew, eight grandnieces and grandnephews, and his granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who was the apple of his eye.

Donald Dicklich’s legacy will be remembered in the hearts of the many lives he touched during his lifetime. His contributions to the community, both in governance and healthcare, have left an indelible mark on the region.
