The city of Selma, Alabama, is revitalizing its AmeriCorps program to combat a significant housing shortage following the destruction caused by an EF-2 tornado in January 2023. The federal initiative aims to mobilize community members to address pressing local needs, specifically in the rebuilding of homes and neighborhoods.

The new AmeriCorps program will focus on providing the necessary manpower to facilitate housing recovery efforts. “We will be out revitalizing the neighborhood,” said Robinson, a program representative. “We’re going to partner with a lot of different groups to ensure we meet the housing needs of the community.”

Participants in the AmeriCorps program will receive a living stipend, health insurance, and an education award that can be applied toward college expenses or student loans after their service. The program seeks individuals with skills in carpentry and electrical work, as well as those with experience in business communication. Robinson emphasized the importance of having team members who can assist residents with filling out housing applications and provide training on home ownership.

The city is actively recruiting volunteers and will host an AmeriCorps sign-up event on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 12:00 to 13:30 at the Selma Convention Center. This initiative represents a concerted effort to rebuild the community and tackle the ongoing housing challenges faced by many residents.

Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton has expressed support for the program, highlighting its potential impact on the recovery process. The AmeriCorps program not only aims to restore physical structures but also seeks to strengthen community ties and improve overall quality of life for Selma’s residents.

With the city still recovering from the tornado’s devastation, the restart of the AmeriCorps initiative reflects a proactive approach to rebuilding and revitalizing Selma. As the program gears up to welcome new members, the community looks forward to enhanced support and resources to help navigate the housing crisis.
