FSU Aims to End Road Losing Streak Against Florida in High-Stakes Rivalry
TALLAHASSEE — Following the decision to retain head coach Mike Norvell for the upcoming season, the focus now shifts to the Florida State Seminoles (FSU) as they prepare to face their long-standing rivals, the Florida Gators, on Saturday at 16:30 (ESPN2). The Seminoles are seeking to break a two-year road losing streak, with their last victory away from home occurring on November 25, 2023, against Florida, where they secured a 24-15 win. Notably, FSU has not triumphed over any of their major rivals, including Miami and Clemson, since that game.
The announcement made by FSU administrators on Sunday regarding Norvell’s retention has alleviated some pressure on the players. They no longer feel the burden of needing to secure victories for Norvell’s job security. “I love coaching these guys, and all I can go off is the actions that they have, but this team plays hard for us,” Norvell stated. He emphasized the importance of stability, noting the pressures that come with uncertainty.
As FSU prepares for the Gators, several key questions arise regarding their chances of success.
Why Did FSU Retain Norvell?
The decision to keep Norvell has drawn attention, particularly considering his buyout, which is estimated to be between $54 million and $58 million, in addition to potential buyouts for coaching staff. This figure significantly surpasses the $17 million spent in 2019 to buy out former coach Willie Taggart. With numerous high-profile coaching vacancies at institutions such as Florida, LSU, and Oklahoma State, the market for coaches is highly competitive. Norvell has pledged to implement “fundamental changes,” which includes enhancing FSU’s off-field staff and expanding the scouting department to improve evaluations of high school prospects and transfers. The foundation has already been laid with contributors from recent recruiting classes, and the upcoming 2026 class, set to sign on December 3, is ranked among the top 15 nationally by 247Sports.
Can FSU Finally Secure a Road Victory?
In their four road games this season, FSU has struggled due to self-inflicted errors, including nine turnovers and 31 penalties, resulting in an 0-4 record. In their most recent outing, a 21-11 loss, the Seminoles managed to penetrate the Wolfpack’s territory seven times but could only convert that into a touchdown and a field goal. Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn noted, “Some of the same things on the road happened again.” He emphasized the need for improvement, stating that better execution in the red zone is essential, as the team has yet to score in the first quarter of their road losses. To have a chance in the Swamp, FSU cannot afford to fall behind early.
How Will FSU Contain Florida’s Top Running Back?
A critical factor in the game will be FSU’s ability to limit the impact of Florida running back Jadan Baugh, who shone in the previous matchup in Tallahassee with 11 carries for 81 yards. The 6-foot-1, 231-pound sophomore has demonstrated his prowess this season, accumulating 904 rushing yards and six touchdowns, alongside 33 receptions for 210 yards. Norvell expressed admiration for Baugh, stating, “You turn on film and he stands out probably as one of the better football players we’ve played this year.” He cautioned that FSU must be prepared to tackle Baugh effectively before he gains momentum.
Despite allowing an average of 17.2 points over the past five games, FSU’s defense has shown vulnerabilities against the run, exemplified by allowing 238 yards in their recent victory over Virginia Tech. The Seminoles will need to bolster their defensive efforts to counter Florida’s offensive threats effectively.
As FSU approaches this crucial matchup, the stakes are high. Ending their road losing streak and claiming a win against a rival could mark a turning point for the program and set a positive tone for the future. Fans and players alike will be keenly watching to see if the Seminoles can rise to the occasion in one of college football’s most intense rivalries.
