Michigan’s Bryce Underwood Reacts to Whittingham Hiring, Prepares for Bowl Game
Michigan’s football program has officially named its 22nd head coach, Kyle Whittingham, as the Wolverines gear up for their upcoming bowl game against Texas. The team has arrived in Florida for the Citrus Bowl, set to take place on December 31, 2023. Initially, it was thought that 25 players might opt out of the game, but only three players—previously mentioned by Biff Poggi—did not make the trip.
Among those present is rising star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who expressed enthusiasm over the Whittingham hire. Underwood recognized that he does not know much about Whittingham, who has a notable coaching history with Utah spanning 21 seasons. “I’m very excited to figure out what kind of guy he is,” Underwood said during a media session. “I was actually pretty excited. Just really excited to see what he does for the University of Michigan.”
Focus on the Citrus Bowl
While Underwood is eager to meet Whittingham and learn more about him, his immediate focus remains on preparing for the game against the Longhorns. He stated, “Right now we’re about to play this bowl game, so that’s the main focus in my head right now.” After the game, Underwood plans to discuss his future with his teammates and family. “After December 31st, we’ll figure it out,” he added.
As Whittingham begins to assemble his coaching staff, the decisions from players are expected to unfold shortly. Retaining Underwood and the young talent within the program will be critical for Whittingham, marking a significant early achievement in his tenure as head coach of the Wolverines.
With the Citrus Bowl on the horizon, Michigan aims to secure a victory against Texas, setting a positive tone for the future under Whittingham’s leadership. The excitement in the air is palpable, as both players and fans look forward to the next chapter in Michigan football.
