The Oklahoma City Thunder have emerged as the frontrunners for the 2025-26 NBA Championship, topping BetMGM’s preseason odds at +240. This comes on the heels of a dominant season where the Thunder clinched 68 regular-season wins and captured the championship. Their pursuit of back-to-back titles is notable, particularly in light of recent salary cap changes that have reshaped roster construction in the league.

The Thunder’s impressive roster has remained largely intact, providing them an opportunity to become the first team to win consecutive championships since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018. Key players include Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is a co-favorite for the MVP award alongside Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. Oklahoma City also boasts a deep and talented supporting cast, which includes All-Star Jalen Williams and promising big man Chet Holmgren.

Oklahoma City’s success last season was underscored by their top-three rankings in both offensive and defensive ratings, showcasing a well-rounded team that still has room for growth. Their challenge will be maintaining health throughout the season, as injuries can drastically alter championship aspirations, as seen with the Boston Celtics last season.

Nuggets Challenge Thunder’s Dominance

The Denver Nuggets pose a significant challenge to the Thunder’s title defense, entering the season with odds of +550. Last year’s Western Conference semifinals saw a hard-fought seven-game series between the two teams, with the Thunder ultimately prevailing. The Nuggets have made substantial roster changes this offseason, including the firing of head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth.

Their offseason moves included trading talented wing Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson, aiming to enhance their defensive capabilities while strengthening their bench. They also acquired Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown to bolster their perimeter rotation and added center Jonas Valanciunas to support Jokic.

As long as Jokic maintains his elite performance, the Nuggets are positioned to be strong contenders under new head coach David Adelman.

Eastern Conference Contenders Emerge

In the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers are viewed as the top contenders with odds of +750. Having secured the best regular-season record last year, they return key players, including All-NBA second team member Evan Mobley and an explosive backcourt featuring Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland.

The Cavaliers are poised to capitalize on the misfortunes of rivals such as the Indiana Pacers and the Boston Celtics, both of whom are facing significant challenges due to injuries to star players Tyrese Haliburton and Jayson Tatum, respectively. The Pacers’ odds have plummeted to +10000, while the Celtics sit at +6000.

The New York Knicks, listed at +900, have made headlines following the firing of head coach Tom Thibodeau and the hiring of Mike Brown. The team retains a strong core, including Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges, and has focused on improving their defensive rating to support their high-octane offense.

The competition in the Western Conference remains fierce, with several teams vying for a championship. The Minnesota Timberwolves at +1300 hope to build on their recent playoff successes, while the Houston Rockets have made a splash by acquiring Kevin Durant, raising their odds to +1400.

As the new NBA season approaches, the landscape is set for a thrilling battle for the championship, with the Thunder leading the charge while formidable challengers loom on all sides.
