12-Year-Old Survivor of Minneapolis Shooting Returns Home After 57 Days
UPDATE: A 12-year-old girl, Sophia Forchas, has returned home after an extraordinary recovery from a gunshot wound sustained during a tragic school shooting on August 27, 2023. Doctors had deemed her condition critical, but after 57 days of intensive treatment, she is greeted by a community rallying around her in Minneapolis.
On Thursday, Sophia was celebrated with a motorcade led by police, traveling through the streets filled with cheering residents. Video posted by Mayor Jacob Frey showcased the emotional moment as a white limousine escorted the young survivor back home. The community came together, waving signs and balloons to welcome Sophia, who is set to celebrate her 13th birthday soon.
Sophia was shot in the head while praying with classmates at the Church of Annunciation during a chaotic shooting that left two children dead and 20 others injured. The assailant opened fire through stained glass windows as students scrambled to find safety under pews, with some worshippers trapped by barricaded doors. Tragically, the children who lost their lives were just 8 and 10 years old, while Sophia’s brother, who was present, remained unharmed.
After the shooting, Sophia’s mother, a pediatric critical care nurse, was working her shift at Hennepin County Medical Center, unaware that her children’s school was involved. The road to recovery for Sophia has been nothing short of miraculous. Initially in critical condition, she gradually regained strength, eventually breathing on her own.
In September, her family shared updates about her “miraculous” progress, stating, “The road ahead for Sophia is steep, but she is climbing it with fierce determination.” Sophia’s journey continued as she transitioned from Gillette Children’s Hospital to express gratitude to first responders at Hennepin Healthcare, where staff welcomed her with hugs and a sign reading “Sophia Strong.”
The hospital described her return as a reason to celebrate, emphasizing her inspiring resilience. “She has inspired so many of us,” they stated, encapsulating the community’s sentiment.
As Sophia returns home, the community’s support and her family’s unwavering faith remain pivotal in her recovery journey. The city of Minneapolis stands united in celebration, filled with hope and love for this brave young girl.
Stay tuned for further updates on Sophia’s recovery and the ongoing impact of this tragic event.
