Dodgers Shake Up Lineup Ahead of Crucial Game 5 vs. Blue Jays
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced major lineup changes just hours before their critical Game 5 against the Toronto Blue Jays, set to begin at 8:00 PM EDT. Manager Dave Roberts is shaking things up in a bid to revitalize an offense that has struggled throughout the World Series.
In a bold move, Will Smith has been elevated to the No. 2 spot, pushing Mookie Betts to third for the first time in four years. Additionally, Alex Call is stepping in for the underperforming Andy Pages at the bottom of the batting order. Roberts believes these adjustments will not only provide Shohei Ohtani with more opportunities for runs batted in but also protect him from being intentionally walked by Blue Jays pitchers.
“As we progress in the postseason, we need to adapt more quickly than in the regular season,” Roberts stated. “I believe these changes give us the best chance to win tonight.”
The stakes are high, with the series tied at 2-2. The Dodgers must win at least one game in Toronto to defend their championship title. Ohtani, who faced media scrutiny after taking a loss in Game 4, has expressed his willingness to contribute from the bullpen if necessary. “If I can go, I will,” he mentioned, leaving the door open for a potential critical role in upcoming games.
Currently, the Dodgers are batting a disappointing .220 with an average of just 3.8 runs per game since the wild-card round. Their struggles escalate when runners are in scoring position, managing only 6-for-29 in those situations.
Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage, known for his devastating splitter, has limited opposing left-handed hitters to a mere .479 OPS this season. This prompted Roberts to shift left-handed hitters Freddie Freeman and Max Muncy to the Nos. 4 and 7 spots, respectively.
Smith, who boasts a robust .348 on-base percentage since returning to the lineup in Game 3 of the NLDS, will now hit directly behind Ohtani, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first catcher to bat second or higher in a World Series game since Mickey Cochrane in 1935.
Betts, struggling at 3-for-19 in the World Series, has been briefed on his new role, and both players are enthusiastic about the changes. Call, recognized for his ability to grind out at-bats, will take over in left field, allowing Enrique Hernandez to start in center for only the fourth time this season. Pages, having a dismal playoff performance with just 4-for-50 at the plate and a record-low OPS for a player with at least 50 plate appearances, will sit out tonight.
Freeman highlighted the need for the team to refocus and not chase pitches outside the zone against Yesavage. “It’s human nature to want to perform at your best in the World Series,” he said. “But we need to recognize the patterns and adapt to get back to our game.”
As the Dodgers face this pivotal moment, fans and analysts alike are watching closely. The adjustments made by Roberts could prove to be the spark the Dodgers need to reclaim momentum in their quest for another championship. Stay tuned as Game 5 unfolds; this matchup is shaping up to be a defining moment in the World Series.
