CHP Urges Drivers to Stay Safe as Millions Travel for Holidays

URGENT UPDATE: As millions prepare for holiday travel, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is issuing vital safety warnings amidst challenging conditions. With an estimated 82 million Americans projected to travel over Thanksgiving, drivers are urged to take precautions to avoid dangerous situations on the road.

Authorities confirm that a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect, starting at Midnight Saturday and lasting into the late morning hours. The National Weather Service Hanford reports visibility may drop to as low as 200 feet, creating hazardous driving conditions. CHP Officer Anthony Daulton stresses the importance of using low beam headlights in fog, stating, “Do not use high beams when you’re in the fog because that actually makes your visibility worse.”

As the holiday rush begins, local mechanics are warning that neglecting vehicle maintenance can lead to serious problems. According to Brandy Ames, a Technician Manager at Sunnyside Auto Repair, drivers should ensure their vehicles are in good standing. “The most important thing anybody can do is get your car to a trusted auto shop every 5,000 miles. For most of us, that’s twice a year,” Ames advises.

With heavy traffic expected and potential emergencies on the road, CHP is reminding travelers that help is just a phone call away. “If you’re on the highway and you dial 9-1-1, it will go to the CHP dispatch,” Officer Daulton adds.

In addition to vehicle checks, motorists should prepare for unexpected delays. Whether facing a blown tire or a medical emergency, being ready is crucial. “Make sure your tires are good, and just prepare for anything that could potentially happen,” Daulton emphasizes.

As travelers hit the roads this holiday season, a final piece of advice resonates: “Say a prayer, hit the road, drive safe, don’t rush,” concludes Ames. With the combination of heavy traffic, fog, and the urgency of reaching destinations safely, now is the time for proactive measures.
