CU Buffs Urgently Revamp Run Defense Ahead of Arizona Clash
URGENT UPDATE: The CU Buffs are scrambling to correct critical mistakes in their run defense after suffering a shocking 53-7 loss to Utah, where they surrendered an astonishing 422 rushing yards. With their upcoming game against Arizona set for Saturday at 5 p.m. (FS1), the pressure is on.
Defensive ends coach George Helow expressed the team’s embarrassment over the performance, stating, “It was something I’ve never been a part of before.” The Buffs (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) currently sit at 134th out of 136 FBS teams in rush defense, allowing an average of 217.25 yards per game. This alarming statistic has surged after the last two games, where they conceded a total of 658 rushing yards.
“We’ve got to own it, correct it, and get better,” Helow said, underscoring the urgency to improve as the team prepares for a less formidable opponent in Arizona (4-3, 1-3). Despite Arizona ranking 12th in the Big 12 with 142.14 rushing yards per game, running back Ismail Madhi poses a significant threat with 445 yards on the season.
Helow outlined a focused game plan to contain Madhi, emphasizing the need to secure the edges and push him north and south. “We can’t let him bounce out to the second level,” he warned. The Buffs have struggled all season with tackling, especially against mobile quarterbacks.
Defensive end Keaten Wade echoed Helow’s sentiments, stating that the team has been reviewing film from the Utah game to address their shortcomings. “We watched the film on Sunday and got the corrections that were needed,” Wade said. “We’re bringing a different type of energy this week.”
Helow took personal responsibility as the defensive run game coordinator, acknowledging, “It’s all on me. I have a job to do. We didn’t get it done.” His candid acknowledgment of the team’s failings adds a human element to the Buffs’ struggle, highlighting the urgency for improvement.
As the Buffs prepare to face Arizona, fans are eager to see if the team can flip the script and bolster their run defense. With just a few games left in the season, every moment counts for the Buffs in their quest for redemption.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops and the Buffs gear up for a crucial showdown at Folsom Field.
