Cupertino Names Tina Kapoor Permanent City Manager in Unanimous Vote
UPDATE: Cupertino has officially appointed Tina Kapoor as the city’s permanent city manager following a unanimous vote by the City Council on November 18, 2023. Kapoor, who has served as the interim city manager since May, stepped into her new role immediately, marking a significant moment for the community.
Kapoor brings nearly 25 years of experience in local government, having previously held key positions in San José, Fremont, and Cupertino. Her extensive background includes serving as Cupertino’s interim assistant city manager, deputy city manager, and economic development manager. Notably, she was recognized as a Woman of Influence in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2015 for her leadership in economic development initiatives.
As the first Indian American to hold this position in Cupertino, Kapoor’s appointment is a historic milestone for the city. She immigrated to the United States from India in 1999, embodying the diverse fabric of the community she now leads. In her role, Kapoor will oversee all municipal operations, implement City Council policies, and continue to advance Cupertino’s strategic priorities.
“I look forward to supporting our strong city team and collaborating with the council and the community,” Kapoor stated in a release. “We will maintain the high level of service that the city provides to our residents while developing a vision for the city’s future.”
Cupertino Mayor Liang Chao expressed confidence in Kapoor’s abilities, stating, “Tina Kapoor’s experience, work ethic, and leadership make her exceptionally well-suited to guide Cupertino forward. She has been a great partner for the City Council since her appointment as interim city manager, and I look forward to working with her to continue to strengthen our organization.”
This development is crucial for Cupertino as it looks to enhance its municipal operations and engage with the community on pressing issues. The immediate focus under Kapoor’s leadership will likely be on maintaining high service levels and fostering economic growth in the area.
As the city embarks on this new chapter, residents and stakeholders are eager to see how Kapoor’s vision will shape the future of Cupertino. Stay tuned for more updates on her initiatives and the impact on local governance.
