URGENT UPDATE: Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has praised rookie Cooper Flagg for his impressive performance at point guard during the preseason but remains noncommittal about his role for the upcoming season. After the Mavericks secured a 121-94 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on October 25, 2023, Kidd emphasized the need for careful consideration before finalizing the lineup.

Kidd noted, “There’s a lot of good, positive stories here, and so we have some time to make a decision.” Flagg, the 18-year-old No. 1 overall pick, transitioned to point guard from forward, where he started his first two preseason games, and averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in his new role.

During the game at T-Mobile Arena, Flagg joined a starting lineup that included NBA stars like Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis. However, the Mavericks faced challenges early, falling behind 22-10 before Flagg was substituted out midway through the first quarter. Concerns about offensive spacing and playmaking were apparent, particularly as the starters struggled with 3-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc.

“He’s done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team,” Kidd said, acknowledging Flagg’s adaptability. “His teammates enjoy him running the team.”

Despite the praise, Flagg’s performance showed room for improvement. He struggled defensively against Lakers guard Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points in just the first four minutes of the game. “Just continuing to get comfortable,” Flagg admitted. “I made some mental lapses today… I’ve got to know [and] be aware of what’s on the clock at all times.”

Kidd remains optimistic about Flagg’s future, insisting that the rookie’s competitive spirit will help him adapt quickly. “In this league against guys who know how to run the pick-and-roll, it’s hard… But with his competitiveness, he’s going to figure it out sooner than later.” As the Mavericks prepare for the regular season, all eyes will be on Flagg and whether he secures the starting point guard position.

Fans and analysts alike are eager for the Mavericks’ next moves, as the team aims to solidify its roster for the upcoming season. With the clock ticking down to the season opener, the decision regarding Flagg’s role could significantly impact Dallas’s strategy and success in the competitive NBA landscape.
