El Reno Community Unites to Honor Fallen Officer Sgt. Duran
UPDATE: The El Reno community is in mourning after the tragic death of Sergeant Thomas Duran, who was struck by a vehicle on October 17, 2023. Residents and law enforcement officials are coming together to honor his sacrifice and support his family during this difficult time.
In a poignant moment, family, friends, and officers from across Oklahoma participated in an emotional honor walk at OU Medical Center on Thursday night, recognizing Sgt. Duran’s wish to be an organ donor. Chief Ken Brown expressed the profound sorrow felt by the police department: “We took that call knowing it’s one of yours, one of your own, and it’s difficult. Imagine even a loss or injury to a family member.”
Community members have shown their support by placing dozens of flowers on a police car outside the El Reno Police Department. The heartfelt tributes reflect the deep respect and admiration for Sgt. Duran, a dedicated officer who served his community with honor.
At the nearby Elks Lodge, a fundraising event is underway to assist Sgt. Duran’s family. Jared Holden, an organizer, confirmed, “100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, is going right back to the family.” The event features a $10 spaghetti dinner, providing an opportunity for the community to come together to heal and support one another.
Holden remarked on the outpouring of support, stating, “It’s been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event. You don’t just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities.” This solidarity highlights the strength and resilience of El Reno in the face of tragedy.
As the community continues to honor Sgt. Duran’s memory, they are also reflecting on the importance of unity and support during trying times. The upcoming days will be crucial as they rally to support the Duran family and ensure his legacy is remembered.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops and the community continues to unite in remembrance and support.
