Experts Urge Realistic Goals for New Year’s Resolutions Now
UPDATE: As we dive into the new year, experts are emphasizing the importance of setting realistic and sustainable New Year’s resolutions. With January 1, 2026 just passed, many are already feeling the pressure to maintain their ambitious goals.
Mental health professionals and coaches are urging individuals to choose resolutions that not only inspire but also stick beyond the typical 60-day mark where most resolutions falter. Clinical therapist Corrine Smorra from Heart and Mind Counseling states, “Just because you mess up once doesn’t mean you failed.” She encourages a mindset shift: “The goal is progress… changing your goal to continue progress is still success.”
Individuals are sharing their personal goals, illustrating the varied approaches people are taking this year. Jillian Sweeney aims to “work on something new at least once a week,” while Kelly Overend has committed to running a 5K every month. Overend noted, “This is the first time I feel determined to follow through. I just make a plan and stick to it.”
However, the reality for many is that resolutions often end up as fleeting promises. Richard Kwon, who has struggled with commitment, remarked, “I am very good at making resolutions and pretty mediocre at following through.” Yet, he still hopes to complete a first draft of a novel this year.
Soccer coach Victor Plasse highlights the importance of establishing habits rather than simply setting goals. “Resolutions fail if you don’t have habits,” he explains. “Enjoying the process is key to continuous growth.”
Experts warn that the focus should not be on overwhelming oneself with more tasks but rather on creating a flexible framework that integrates well into one’s life. As we move through January, it’s clear that the 2026 focus is on making changes that endure, rather than just temporary fixes.
As the new year unfolds, remember that resolutions are about personal growth and finding joy in the journey. With the right mindset and realistic goals, this year could be the breakthrough many have been waiting for. Share your resolutions and progress with others to foster community support!
