UPDATE: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are NOT patrolling Muni vehicles, responding to public concerns that have surged recently. In a statement released on social media on October 23, 2025, SFMTA clarified, “There are no credible reports that ICE agents are boarding Muni buses.”

This announcement comes amid heightened tensions regarding federal law enforcement presence in San Francisco. Just days earlier, ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents arrived at Coast Guard Island in Alameda following orders from President Donald Trump. The deployment sparked significant protests as hundreds gathered to block access to the only bridge connecting the island to Oakland.

In a pivotal conversation on Wednesday night, Mayor Daniel Lurie revealed that President Trump agreed to halt plans for a federal “surge” of agents into San Francisco. Lurie, along with tech leaders like Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, played a crucial role in advocating for the city to have more time to address crime through local law enforcement.

The situation remains fluid, and the public is urged to report any ICE activity via the San Francisco Rapid Response Network. As protests and fears of increased surveillance persist across the Bay Area, the community is grappling with the implications of federal actions that could threaten local values of inclusivity and safety.

Residents and commuters can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Muni transit remains free of ICE patrols for now. However, the ongoing political climate and the potential for future federal actions keep tensions high among San Francisco’s diverse population.

As the city navigates these challenges, all eyes will be on how local leaders handle safety and security in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, and share your thoughts on how these changes impact your community.
