KDE Confirms X11 Support Ending in Plasma 6.8, Effective 2027
UPDATE: KDE has just announced that support for the X11 system will officially end with the release of KDE Plasma 6.8, expected in early 2027. This significant shift marks a major transition for users who have relied on X11 but also highlights the increasing dominance of Wayland in the Linux environment.
According to the official KDE blog, the decision comes as the majority of Plasma users have already migrated to Wayland. The organization asserts that most users will hardly notice X11’s departure when the time comes. However, those who depend on X11 have been given a clear timeline and options to adapt.
Currently, KDE Plasma is at version 6.5, with several updates planned before 6.8 is launched. The transition is designed to provide ample time for users to adjust, as KDE has committed to maintaining X11 support until early 2027.
KDE emphasizes that users who still require X11 have alternatives. Users can opt for long-term support (LTS) distributions like AlmaLinux 9, which will retain X11 compatibility until 2032. Additionally, the Xwayland compatibility layer is available, providing a bridge for most X11 applications. KDE assures that improvements are expected to enhance compatibility over the next year.
This announcement comes amid the growing push for more modern and efficient desktop environments, as Wayland has been noted to perform better on many systems. For new users and those transitioning to KDE Plasma, this update marks a pivotal moment in Linux desktop development.
As the deadline approaches, users are encouraged to explore their options and prepare for this shift. Developers have expressed confidence that the community will adapt smoothly, thanks to the foresight provided by this announcement.
With the end of X11 support on the horizon, KDE is urging users to make necessary adjustments sooner rather than later. This change is not just a technical upgrade; it symbolizes a broader evolution in the Linux ecosystem, pushing forward into a new era of desktop experience.
Stay tuned for further updates as KDE continues to refine its offerings and support for users.
