Lauri Markkanen Scores 51, Leads Jazz to Overtime Victory
BREAKING: Lauri Markkanen has made history by scoring a career-high 51 points in a thrilling overtime victory for the Utah Jazz against the Phoenix Suns, winning 138-134 on October 30, 2023. Markkanen becomes the first Jazz player to score over 50 points in a regular-season game since Karl Malone did it in 1998.
This remarkable performance comes after a nail-biting finish where the Jazz nearly lost a seven-point lead in the final 19 seconds of regulation. Markkanen dominated the overtime period, scoring seven points and securing 14 rebounds overall.
In a feat that ties the franchise record, Markkanen also made all 17 free throws, matching the most without a miss in Jazz history. This stellar outing surpasses his previous high of 49 points set earlier this year on January 5, 2023. Notably, he is now the first player in Jazz history to achieve 50 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 made three-pointers in a single game.
Keyonte George contributed significantly with 26 points and 10 assists, while Walker Kessler added 25 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. The Jazz, who are predicted to finish near the bottom of the NBA, now hold a record of 2-1 and are just a rebound away from being undefeated.
The Suns, now at 1-3, have suffered three consecutive losses. Devin Booker led the Suns with 34 points, scoring 24 points after halftime, while Grayson Allen added 23 points. Phoenix was missing Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks due to injuries, but Mark Williams returned from a knee injury, contributing 25 points and 11 rebounds.
The Jazz controlled much of the game and were ahead 122-115 after George’s free throws with 23 seconds left in regulation. However, Booker sank two critical three-pointers, and a late foul sent him to the line, allowing the Suns to tie the game and force overtime.
Markkanen’s attempt at a game-winning jumper missed as time expired in regulation, but he quickly redeemed himself in overtime. George’s running bank shot with 40 seconds left snapped a tie, and Markkanen sealed the win with two clutch free throws with just 1.9 seconds remaining.
This extraordinary game marks a significant moment in Jazz history, ending a span of 27 years and 203 days since the last 50-point game, the fourth-longest stretch in NBA history. Fans and analysts are buzzing about Markkanen’s performance and what it means for the Jazz moving forward.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Markkanen and the Jazz to see if they can maintain their momentum. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
