New York City Prepares for Urgent Snowstorm Starting Friday
UPDATE: A major winter storm is set to hit New York City starting Friday, December 15, 2023, with snowfall expected to begin as early as 1 p.m. and intensifying after 8 p.m.. The City Department of Sanitation warns that residents could see up to 9 inches of snow blanketing the five boroughs, creating hazardous conditions.
As the storm approaches, Sanitation workers are on high alert. The department has mobilized for double duty, urging all New Yorkers to stay off the roads to facilitate snow removal operations. With significant snowfall expected to continue through Saturday afternoon, this is a developing situation that demands immediate attention.
Officials have confirmed that the heaviest snowfall is anticipated between 8 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, putting additional pressure on city resources. The Department has prepared over 700 salt spreaders and thousands of plow trucks to address road conditions as soon as the snow begins to fall. A staggering 700 million pounds of salt is on standby to ensure the safety of city streets, highways, and bike lanes.
In anticipation of the storm, additional city agencies, including the NYPD and the Departments of Transportation, Parks, and Environmental Protection, are expected to assist in storm response efforts. This multi-agency approach highlights the seriousness of the situation and the city’s commitment to public safety.
While it is typical for the mayor to hold press briefings ahead of significant snowfalls, Mayor Eric Adams, who is leaving office on Wednesday, did not schedule any briefing for Friday. However, he has shared important updates through his social media channels, including alerts from NotifyNYC and the Sanitation Department regarding the impending weather.
As New Yorkers brace for this storm, residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travel. This urgent snowstorm could significantly impact post-holiday plans and daily commutes, making it essential for everyone to exercise caution.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation evolves, and prepare for what could be one of the most challenging winter storms to hit the city this season.
