UPDATE: Oklahoma basketball coach Porter Moser is mourning the loss of his dear friend, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, who passed away last week at the age of 106. Moser shared his heartfelt reflections just before heading to Chicago for Sister Jean’s funeral mass scheduled for Thursday.

“My heart is sad,” Moser stated, emphasizing the profound impact Sister Jean had on his life. “It’s also joy and gratitude that she was in my life.” Sister Jean became a national icon during the 2018 NCAA tournament, where she famously supported Moser’s Loyola-Chicago team on their remarkable journey to the Final Four.

Known for her vibrant spirit, Sister Jean captured the hearts of basketball fans across the country, including notable figures like President Joe Biden, who once sent her flowers. Moser recalled her infectious positivity and independence, even at the age of 98 when she lived in student dorms, embodying a spirit of self-sufficiency that inspired all around her.

Moser recalled a chilly night in Chicago when he offered Sister Jean a ride back to the dorms. “No, no. This is great for me,” she insisted, demonstrating her unwavering independence despite the freezing temperatures.

Her passion for basketball was genuine—she would hush anyone who distracted her while watching games, highlighting her deep love for the sport. “I remember her being such a basketball fan,” Moser noted, reflecting on her spirited nature during games.

Sister Jean served as a chaplain for Loyola-Chicago basketball since 1991, praying for both the Ramblers and their opponents, and offering pregame pep talks to Moser’s players. Moser and Sister Jean maintained their friendship even after he left Loyola-Chicago for Oklahoma in 2021, attending her birthday celebrations at 105 and 106.

As Moser prepares for Sister Jean’s funeral, he expresses a profound sentiment: “There will never be another person like Sister Jean.” Her legacy of kindness, warmth, and spirited enthusiasm for basketball will remain etched in the hearts of those who knew her.

Stay tuned for more updates on Sister Jean’s memorial service and the ongoing tributes to her remarkable life.
