Rochester Teams Set to Ignite Hockey Day Minnesota Week
UPDATE: Two Rochester teams are primed to kick off the highly anticipated Hockey Day Minnesota week with an electrifying match on January 17, 2026. The Century/John Marshall (Century/JM) boys hockey team will face their rivals from Mayo High School at the state-of-the-art Scheels Rink in Hastings, Minnesota, marking a historic first game for this week-long celebration of hockey.
This exciting development comes as a result of a conversation initiated by Matt Erredge, co-head coach of Century/JM, who reached out to Jeff Taffe, Chief Development Officer for the United Heroes League. Taffe, a former NHL player, helped secure the involvement of Rochester teams in this prestigious event. The main Hockey Day Minnesota festivities are set for January 24, 2026, but the action begins a week earlier.
The opening game will commence at 10 a.m., featuring the Century/JM team squaring off against the Mayo Spartans. This matchup is not just another game; it’s a unique opportunity for players to participate in a memorable outdoor hockey experience, showcasing Minnesota’s deep-rooted love for the sport. Erredge expressed, “If we can get involved in that week somehow, it’d be an awesome thing for Rochester hockey.”
The significance of this event extends beyond just a game. It represents a chance for local players to create lasting memories. Mayo’s head coach, Matt Notermann, echoed this sentiment, highlighting their commitment to providing players with unique experiences. “This is what it’s about, finding ways to make some memories and have some fun,” Notermann stated.
In addition to the Century/JM vs. Mayo game, the Rochester Grizzlies will also participate in Hockey Day Minnesota week, facing the Granite City Lumberjacks on January 23, 2026. This game precedes a special matchup featuring the Iowa Wild against the Milwaukee Admirals, further amplifying the excitement of the week.
As the countdown to January 17 begins, local hockey fans are encouraged to mark their calendars. The event promises to deliver thrilling competition and an unforgettable atmosphere at the United Heroes League rink. The facility, equipped with professional-grade amenities, is poised to host a total of 23 games throughout the week.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase Rochester hockey on a bigger stage,” Erredge added. With both teams eager to make an impact, the community is rallying behind them, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie and competition that defines Minnesota hockey.
