Sacramento Launches Urgent Community Input on Sound Policy Update
UPDATE: Sacramento is urgently seeking public input on its new Community Sound Management Framework aimed at modernizing entertainment sound policies. Residents and local businesses have a critical opportunity to influence these changes during community meetings scheduled for December 8, 9, and 10, 2023.
According to Sacramento City Express, the initiative was shaped by over 1,100 survey responses and insights from the Sacramento Music Census. Don Pitts, president of Sound Music Cities, emphasized the community’s strong desire for updates in managing entertainment sound, highlighting that input will directly impact the framework’s adoption in 2026.
The drafted framework includes key strategies such as integrating Sound Impact Plans with permits and appointing an official to ensure consistent implementation across city departments. Megan Van Voorhis, director of Convention and Cultural Services, stated that the framework aims to balance residents’ quality of life with the city’s vibrant creative activities.
Notable adjustments to current sound management protocols are also proposed. These include improved communication efforts, enforcement of source-based sound measurement, and enhanced management of low-frequency sounds to alleviate complaints about bass disturbances.
Dustin Hollingsworth, assistant director of Convention and Cultural Services, reiterated the importance of community feedback in shaping the final policies. He noted that the proposed changes are designed to address concerns while supporting the local entertainment industry.
Residents, venue owners, and event organizers are encouraged to participate in the upcoming meetings to voice their opinions and help refine the framework. All related documents, including the full Community Sound Management Framework and the Sacramento Music Census, are accessible on the City’s official website.
This initiative marks a vital step in aligning Sacramento’s entertainment sound management with the needs of its community, making it essential for residents to engage in this process. Don’t miss your chance to make your voice heard!
