UPDATE: Authorities have identified the suspect in the tragic killing of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nuñez, who was shot while responding to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga, California, at around 12:37 p.m. Monday. The suspect, Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, remains hospitalized after a dramatic high-speed motorcycle chase that ended in a crash on the 210 Freeway.

As flags fly at half-staff statewide, the community mourns the loss of Deputy Nuñez, who was pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m. after succumbing to a gunshot wound to the head. Sheriff Shannon Dicus confirmed that the deputy had served with the Sheriff’s Department for six years and was a dedicated father and husband, leaving behind a pregnant wife, a two-year-old daughter, and extended family.

Witness accounts reveal the chaos that unfolded at a condominium complex on Hollyhock Drive, where Nuñez and fellow deputies were fired upon shortly after their arrival. “He is just trying to do his job and he died,” said a neighbor reflecting on the tragedy. The sheriff’s department confirmed that Saldivar, who is not affiliated with any law enforcement agency, will face formal charges including murder upon his medical clearance.

The pursuit escalated after Saldivar fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading to a crash initiated by an off-duty narcotics officer who intervened. Moments before the collision, witnesses reported seeing Saldivar brandishing what appeared to be a weapon. He was taken into custody and is currently in stable condition.

In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, a makeshift memorial has emerged outside the Rancho Cucamonga sheriff’s station, with mourners leaving candles, flowers, and heartfelt notes. One neighbor, Beni San Tiesteban, expressed disbelief at the loss of such a good man, who was remembered for his kindness and community spirit.

A procession of over 100 law enforcement officers honored Nuñez as his body was transported from the hospital to the coroner’s office. In response to the tragedy, Governor Gavin Newsom extended condolences on behalf of all Californians, praising Nuñez’s courage and dedication to protecting others.

As the investigation continues, the district attorney’s office is expected to file additional domestic violence charges against Saldivar. The sheriff’s department has also established a donation page through the Peace Officers Research Association of California to support Nuñez’s family during this difficult time.

This developing story highlights the profound impact of violence on communities and the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers. Stay tuned for further updates as authorities continue their investigation into this tragic event.
